Sharing what we like to do, in front of people we see every day, and showcasing our talent. This is the purpose of the Open Mic Lunches, an initiative promoted by teachers Elías Arias and Andrés Viales.
This cultural space is an effort to integrate the Lincoln community and create a conversation that incentivizes students, teachers, and administrators’ participation.
"It is important for any institution to have activities like these that give us reasons to talk, a simple reason to get closer, and have contact with other people," Arias said.
Open Mic Lunch’s first session completely changed the usual lunch routine, students from different divisions came to witness the artistic talent of our community members.
With sandwiches, cookies, and drinks in hand, the students listened to the voices of Emma Yick and Sebastián Pardo, who were accompanied by their classmates Javier Leiva (bass) and Andrew Murphy (bass/guitar). Teachers Bradford Melius (drums), Andrés Viales (guitar), and Elías Arias (keyboard) also participated. Alejandro Araya was in charge of sound.
Last Wednesday, Elementary and High School teachers, Pablo López, together with Gina McCarrel and Ilana Long, sang their own music and some covers that were enjoyed by students and staff who attended the activity.
The idea is to do this activity at least twice a month and with the open participation of all members of the community.
After more than a year of living in a pandemic, the sanitary restrictions allowed us to resume these types of activities that are essential for recreation and creating a sense of community.
